ii ii Abstract Civilization and historical development make language into being. Languages directly reflect people?s relationship, interactions and social conditions. The frequently contact among different speech communities for the political, economic and cultural aims leads to the language contact. Code-switching is one of the results of the language contact, which often can be found in people?s communication of native bilingual or multilingual entities. With the rapid development of China and the increasingly frequent contact with the western countries, it is common to see that Chinese-English code-switching not only appear in people?s daily conversation, but also in some Chinese written discourses such as literary works, newspaper and magazines. The researchers, who study code-switching, of western countries mostly focused on the conversational code-switching. The main approaches that they have used include psycholinguistics, sociolinguistic, pragmatics and conversational analysis. But few linguists have paid their attention to the study of written code-switching. At present, the researches of Chinese-English code-switching in fashion magazines such as dresses, make-ups, furnishings and so on remain at a rudimentary stage. Thus, this thesis chooses this genre to study code-switching, so as to make a thorough analysis of the usages of Chinese-English code-switching in fashion magazines, including the levels, features and adaptability. The purpose of this thesis is broadening the study of code-switching by the support of Adaptation Theory, in order to widen its application in our daily life. PAGE PAGE iii The data of the study were collected from three domestic influential fashion magazines: ELLE, ViVi and mina. Findings of the qualitative analysis of the code-switching in the magazines show that code-switching is a very useful strategy in fashion magazines. Editors switch code frequently to fulfill adaptation and then realize some specific purposes.
