Waterfront greenway as one of the most important types of greenways, has variety functions such as ecological, leisure, recreation, economic, social, cultural, and so on. It is just the method that can meet the functional requirements of the urban waterfront area.. Waterfront greenway is an effective way to solve the contradiction between the waterfront human activities and ecological environment protection, as well as to control urbanization sprawl and promote both urban and rural development. In this paper, the fundamental theory study including the theory of landscape design, theory of landscape ecology, theory of the suitability analysis theory and the theory of Heritage Corridor, and the recreation science basic theory. Then the author summarized greenway evolution in both abroad and in China. The author chooses some classic practical cases in building waterfront greenway, study the waterfront greenway’s contents and methods of planning and designing. Such as， the structure of the urban waterfront greenway, the classification of waterfront greenway. Then explore the principles of waterfront greenway’s planning and design, the contents of waterfront greenway’s planning and design, the process and strategy of waterfront greenway’s planning and design. This paper expects to set design reference for future construction of urban waterfront greenway.
