However, in light of changes to risk environments and the globalization of the food industry, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has looked to modernize and adapt its food safety system to these changes. Relevant Acts: Canada Agricultural Products Act, Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, Food and Drugs Act, Fish Inspection Act, and Meat Inspection Act Separate commodity-based regulations were developed for dairy products, eggs, fish (and seafood), fresh fruit and vegetable, honey, maple products, meat, organic products, processed eggs, and processed products. Recent food safety incidents have highlighted the need to modernize Canada’s system in order to focus on prevention and improve the CFIA’s ability to respond to food safety issues in a timely manner. CFIA is in the process of implementing the Food Safety Modernization Action Plan that provides for the consolidation of the legislation and regulation that governs the food safety system in Canada. Safe Food for Canadians Act brings together all food inspection regulations previously administered under four separate Acts, into one enabling piece of legislation. The SFCA received Royal Assent in November, 2012. * The Agency’s inspection activities affect the entire spectrum of food production from production on the farm through to processing and distribution and finally consumption.
