ABSTRACT Sketch is an important art painting form, and it also has a pivotal position as “original image” in Dunhuang fresco. The research and copy of sketch has been started at present. However, there are so many difficulties, such as, the large scale and much content of fresco, the loss of color and lines, and forbidden of fresco ruins. With the rapid development of computer technology and image processing, we can automatically generate sketch of fresco, which is meaningful to protect the cultural heritage and provide an opportunity for painters and visitors to enjoy sketch. In addition, in order to compensate for artists and learners, we can develop a copy tool to help them paint rapidly and effectively. Based on the above, we continue to study and optimize the framework of sketch generation of fresco, including: main content separation, hierarchical structure segmentation, lines extraction, missing content replacing and vector optimization. Optimized framework is easier to extract and gain satisfying sketch. Meanwhile, we research and implementation the sketch stitching techniques. Besides, we design and develop a copy tool from freedom style and guidance style. The main function includes the basis painting functions, the sketch extraction and vector optimization in freedom style and the main content separation, sketch extraction, vector optimization and lines selection in guidance style. Our work has successfully implemented a better framework to gain sketch from fresco, and it also can provide evidence and ideas for other future research, while that our copy tool development and implementation also provide an effective painting copy tool for painters, and provide a unique exhibition and interactive platform for visitors.
