This paper aims at making a contrastive study of the cultural connotations and pragmatic functions of address forms in English and Chinese based on the researches and studies from other scholars. By making a clear comparison between English and Chinese address forms, it is hoped that this paper can make the readers have a better understanding of address forms and provide inspiration and guidance for intercultural communication and EFL teaching. Key words: address form, contrastive study, cultural connotation, pragmatic function 摘 要：称呼语是人们日常交流中必不可少的一部分，它是所有成功交际的关键所在。本文在其他研究者研究成果的基础上，将英汉称呼语的文化内涵以及语用功能进行了对比。通过对比英汉称呼语，希望能促使读者对英汉称呼语有更好的了解，同时也能为跨文化交流和外语教学提供一些启发和指导。 关键字：称呼语，对比研究，文化内涵，语用功能　 Introduction Address forms are inevitable in the human communication wherever in any country and under whatever kind of culture. Address forms are used to call a person in social communication. They compose one of the most important parts of language word systems and reflect the speaker and addressee’s age, identity, social role and status, as well as the intimacy and remoteness of their relationship. The final address form one decides to use to call that person reflects the factors such as the relationship and the feelings between him/her and the addressee. What’s more, the switch of address form may be as a signal of the change of their relationship and status. Besides the important role in interpersonal communication, address forms are also crucial in intercultural communication. Every country has its own cultural system as well as address form system. With the development of the world and the rising China, the communication between
