II II Abstract Diversification as an enterprise’s strategic decision attracted widespread attention from the 1980s, and the research findings have developed to a quiet mature stage, but there was less research in the special financial industry: commercial bank. With the trend of diversification in international finance market and the deregulation in domestic, diversification strategy has becoming a reality choice to widen income sources, improve traditional income structure which was put high dependence on interest income and responded to banking competition. Review former research, we could found that diversification has both positive and negative affect on commercial banks. Most research held that diversification would improve bank performance, but other opinion indicated diversification would also bring about a lot problem and impede bank business development. Diversification retrenchment of the City Bank and the Deutsche Bank in recent years and the subprime crisis in 2007, those facts provoked people’s thinking once again. Therefore, effectively implementing diversification strategy built on objective evaluation about what influence could diversification bring on commercial bank, that is exactly what we try to discuss about. This paper introduces the rationale of diversification of enterprise at first, as the theory footstone of research: Enterprise carry out diversification strategic for pursuing economy of scope, risk reduction and transaction costs saving; and then, this paper describes the current status of commercial bank business which was in tend of diversification, manifesting in building bank holding company and expanding line of business; then combined with theoretical basis, this paper present diversification’s influence in cost, income and risk, then followed by empirical analysis, the research sample includes 13 commercial banks, from 2002 to 2010.
