Abstract Urban ecosystem is a Social-Economic-Natural Complex made of human beings and their surrounding environment, and is characterized by integrity and synthesis.In this system, the urban population and their activities jointly form the core component, which is inseparable with the urban eco-environment. It is understood that, because resource and environment are crucial to the existence and development of an urban ecosystem, the development of an urban ecosystem is necessarily built on the interactions between environmental carrying capacity, resource carrying capacity and social-economic development capacity. It can not be anything to study single component’s carrying capacity by taking no account of system integrity. Therefore, after systemic and deeply researched on urban ecosystem carrying capacity (UECC) theory and calculation method, ecosystem development situation were comprehensive assessed. Furthermore, strategies of improving UECC were also studied. The research specifically included the followings: The development of UECC theories were interpreted in view of characteristics of urban ecosystem. Quantitative assessment methods were compared. Then, the achievements and research stresses of researchers from domestic and overseas were analyzed. Base on the concept of UECC, relationship between structure and function of urban ecosystem and carrying capacity, between carrying object and host, between UECC and city sustainable development were analyzed. A comprehensive assessment model of UECC was introduced，which including three parts: urban ecosystem support model，urban ecosystem pressure model and the urban ecosystem carrying capacity model. A case study was conducted in Wuhan city as the application.After analyzing the limiting factors, the assessment of UECC in Wuhan from 1995 to 2004 was analyzed to study the change of the urban ecosystem.
