Abstract During late Qing dynasty,the Chinese legal system and research method has changed dramaticly. Among the factors that contributing to the phenomenon,the missionaries played a positive and important role.In order to conduct a comprehensive interpretation of the interaction between the missionaries and law, this paper does a corresponding discussion which focuses on the social background 、missionary activities and the positive roles they performed during this period. In the first chapter,the paper made a brief description on the origin and status of research on the topic of the subject. Meanwhile,the research paths and goals were decided in this chapter. The background and activities of missionaries in China has been described in the second chapter. Their antivities such as compilation books and newspapers laid the foundation for the transition of modern Chinese legal system by introduced a large number of legal theory and legal terms into China. In addition,the missionaries also keen on developing foreign treaties ,and actively seize their privileged interests,fight for the freedom to preach. These issues had a tremendous impact on the Chinese intellectuals and enlightened bureaucracy, causing them to think of Chinese modernization. The third and forth chapters describe the effects of the missionaries activities on Chinese law. For instance, the late Qing domestic law contained a lot of articles related to missionaries,there were even more clauses connected with them in the international treaties. Meanwhile, on the aspects of instruction of legal thoughts、the application of international law and the translation of legal terms, the missionaries also made the corresponding contributions. In addition, the missionaries actively committed to legal education and trained a large number of Chinese professionals.
