Title: The Study On The English Versions Of The Art Of War ——From The Science Translation Criticism Object Theory Major: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Name: Dongxiao HAO Signature Supervisor: Qingming LI Signature Abstract In modern times, the global communication relies on translation industry unprecedentedly. In the current economic tide, most translators translate for utilitarian purposes, so the quality of the translation would be difficult to be guaranteed. In recent years, translation criticism research has attracted the attention of China’s translation industry; however, compared with the study of translation theory and history, translation criticism research is still relatively weak. The Art of War enjoys a worldwide reputation as an ancient military classic and its spreading to the outside world can not have been achieved without the support of the translation industry. The transmission of Chinese Classics contributes to the promotion of Chinese language and culture, which can enhance both the cultural soft power and the national comprehensive strength of China. Translation criticism has been marked by impressionistic and often paradoxical judgments based on elusive aesthetics. This study seeks to develop an empirical model for science translation criticism based on objective parameters of textual typology, formal correspondence, pragmatic equivalence and lexico-syntactic properties. The science translation criticism is emerging as a dynamic system combined with subjectivity and objectivity, from macroscopic to microscopic study. This thesis attempts to guide the practice of translation criticism by applying it to scientific translation criticism practice.
