Abstract The random laser, as a new-type laser, has special theorem in the amplifying disordered media. It is a laser that makes light amplifying by the coherent feedback which is provided by the scattering effect, and that there is light output in many directions, so it has been a hot subject in laser physics field and it presents an important value in application. In recent years, various new experimental reports have been emerging. In this thesis, based on these experiments, we study the threshold property of polarization modes in two-dimensional random lasers by using the time-dependent theory of random lasers and Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. And we focus on studying the competition in the population inversion between the transverse electric (TE) polarization state and the transverse magnetic(TM) polarization state. The main contents of this thesis are summarized as follows: A numerical study on the threshold property of TE and TM polarization states individually in two-dimensional random medium has been performed. By calculating the intensity spectrum of the same random medium under different pump rates for both TM and TE polarization states, we obtained the pump rate dependence of the peak intensity for the two states respectively. The results show that, if there is no competition of inversed population between TM and TE states, the lasing threshold of TE state is larger than that of TM state. A numerical study on the competition between two polarization states in two-dimensional random medium has been performed. The threshold property of polarization modes was investigated in cases that the TE state shares population inversion with the TM state. Contrary to the results when there is no competition between TM and TE states, the TM state is restrained greatly and has much larger lasing threshold than that of TE state.
