The definition of “lexical bundles” in the present study is “most frequently occurring sequences of three or more words that show a statistical tendency to co-occur” and “L2 writing” refers to the writing of English learners at any stage of study. Lexical bundles can be perceived holistically, thus reducing the cognitive load of listeners. Lexical bundles can also be retrieved holistically, thus increasing the fluency of spoken and written English. Lexical bundles are generally acknowledged useful for learners of English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) because they facilitate language processing and production. Previous studies have found that learners tend to use less diverse lexical bundles and overuse the lexical bundles they know well. Recent corpus studies show more complex pictures of the lexical bundles in writing. This paper briefly reviews previous studies of lexical bundles including the definition, classifications, functions, advantages of using lexical bundles，empirical studies of lexical bundles especially those in the writing area. This paper adopted a corpus-based approach to identify frequently-used lexical bundles in writing. Lexical bundles retrieved from the native-speaker corpus BAWE and learner corpus CLEC were investigated both quantitatively and qualitatively. Data analyses were carried out from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. The quantitative analysis was intended to find out the most frequently used lexical bundles in the BAWE corpus and CLEC corpus respectively, while the qualitative analysis focused on the features of lexical bundles used
