Analysis on the acceptance of English translations on the names of Chinese formulae: Survey on three methods of English Translation on the names of Chinese formulae ABSTRACT Objective: There exist no specific rules and standards for English translation on the names of Chinese Formulae, and therefore differences occur to the acceptance of the translated versions of the names of Chinese formulae. In order to achieve the objective information and evaluation, an elaborately designed questionnaire and interviews were adopted to the overseas students practicing in Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine to investigate the preference to the three translation methods of the names of 18 formulae, and detailed analysis was provided to such tendencies. Methods: 1. Questionnaire: A random survey was conducted among the short-term overseas students practicing in Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine from April, 2011 to 2012, and the first preferred, the second preferred and the frequencies of non-preferred or other options were statistically counted from the results of 34 available questionnaires. 2. Interviews: Interviews were involved to the individuals who had studied traditional Chinese medicine so as to obtain any specific comments and suggestions on the different English versions of a formulae name. 3. Text analysis: Different English versions of the names of Chinese formulae were discussed to explore the in-depth cultural and scientific connotation behind the translated formulae. Results: 1.The data shows that there is no obvious difference to the acceptance of the different translations, with a slightly higher percentage of the method of literal translation, followed by free translation and transliteration. 2.
