访国际艾滋病的研究专家何大一 　　本期人物：何大一(Ho David)，国际艾滋病研究专家，1952年出生于台湾，在台中度过了12年的童年生活之后，随家人移居美国。二十多年来，何大一致力于攻克艾滋病的研究，他始创“鸡尾酒疗法”，鸡尾酒疗法可以将艾滋病患者的死亡率降低到20%，同时他使用多种药物有效抑制早期感染的艾滋病毒。他也因此成为《时代》周刊1996年度风云人物。他是获得中国工程院院士殊荣的五名外籍人士之一。 　　Shui：主持人水均益；Dr. Ho：受访嘉宾何大一 　　 　　The Appearance of HIV/AIDS 　　 　　Shui: You witnessed the birth of AIDS and HIV epidemics in 1981. I’m very curious to know, at the very beginning when you, you know, confronted those patients ?C many of them are very young men or young women ?C what was your feeling at that time? And especially when you know and you have to tell them that they can not survive. 　　Dr. Ho: Right. It was a great mystery and a great tragedy back in 1980-81 when I first encountered AIDS patients. I was just finishing my medical training, after, you know, 3 years after I finished my medical school education. And so I was a young, naive physician, and I saw these, initially just one young man who came into the hospital with many infections, and we could not explain what was going on. He was well before, and now, all of a sudden, his immune system was not functioning. And many different viruses or bacteria were attacking his body. He went on to die in the course of a few weeks, and a few weeks after that, another patient came. And a few weeks after that, another patient came in. And this mystified not only myself, but all the doctors and scientists alike. And so it was a great mystery. But even as a naiuml;ve, young physician, I knew that a similar description was not to be found in the textbooks. It was new, and it was something new, something that destroyed the immune system. So I took interest in that because of my scientific curiosity. 　　 　　Curiosity and Chance 　　 　　Shui: Basically speaking, it was because of this kind of a curiosity that made you want to focus on the research of this. 　　Dr. Ho: You’re exactly right. I’m a curious type. I have always been interested in science, and as someone interested in science you’re curious by defini
