ii ii Abstract With the translation of English parentheses in 1920’s as an example, the thesis discusses the possible influence of translation on the early development of modern Chinese. In order to explore the influence on modern Chinese in 1920’s, first, the author collects translations in 1920’s and their English source texts. Then the author searches sentences with English parentheses and their Chinese translations. Third, by using CCL corpus, the author searches expressions related to parentheses in Chinese translations in ancient Chinese original works and modern Chinese texts in 1920’s to make a diachronic comparison. The findings made in the study are listed below. Firstly, new parentheses are taken into modern Chinese through translation. For example, some manner-of-speaking parentheses, such as “yangeshuolai” ( 严格说来 ) and “gengtuodangdeshuo” (更妥当地说), are introduced into modern Chinese, which contributes to the accuracy of modern Chinese and exerts relative obvious influence on modern Chinese. Take another example. Expressions with the “jiushi” (就是) structure, such as “jiushi” (就是) and “najiushishuo” (那就是说), begin to be used as parentheses in modern Chinese under the influence of the translation, but, this change is not obvious. Secondly, the translation promotes the subjectivisation of some expressions, for example, “woxiangxin” (我相信), “kongpa” (恐怕), “shizaishuo” (实在说) and “zhishao” (至少). Originally, they are used to describe objective events. When they are used in translations, they can express the speaker’s cognition, attitudes and viewpoints. These usages are taken into modern Chinese in 1920’s, which promotes the subjectivity of these expressions. Thirdly, the translation of parentheses speeds up the grammaticalization of some modern Chinese expressions, for instance, “shizaishuo”(实在说), “huozhe”(或者), “kongpa” (恐怕) and “zhishao”(至少).
