Develop a personal, direct, and proper style The language a speaker uses in speaking is usually personal and direct. For example, rhetorical questions and personal pronouns such as “you”, “I”, and “we” are often used in his presentation. Proper language style here refers to the particular presentation style you should adopt at international academic conferences. Literary skills in Speeches The figures of speech that are often employed by presenters include similes , repetition, and antithesis.? Repeating the same sound in a series of words is called alliteration. E.g., a presenter making a speech on the drug problem employs alliteration when he says, “we must defend ourselves against the dangerous demon of drug dependency.” How to Use Technical Terms Academic speeches are full of jargon, that is, words or phrases that are specific to a particular area of study. If you use a piece of jargon, follow it with a comma and a phrase that explains it. That is the same case with acronyms (abbreviations). Acronyms are simply letters that refer to words. For example, SFG, which stands for Systemic Functional Grammar, is an acronym. Remember that the first time you use an acronym, you should give its full name.
