Abstract
With the fast-developing technology and more fierce competition within the
industries, the lifecycle of a product is becoming much shorter than before and
the boundaries between industries are fading away. It is a rational approach for
an enterprise to implement strategic transformation when it is facing a declining
profitability or a bottle neck against further development. As a third-party
payment service institution, the Bestpay Co. Ltd, has come across the same
dilemma as the other entities in the industry has done. In this scenario, Bestpay
implemented the related industry transformation and established its business
line in the Internet finance industry. With the help of its mature online and
mobile payment techniques, Bestpay has built its own competency in this new
field.
This paper mainly applies the theories of strategic management to analyze the
business model selection and transformation. The concepts of barrier model and
premium model were introduced to explain the startup, change and extinction of
a business model in a dynamic way. The analysis on how business models change
provided the profound rationale for a firm’s strategic transformation. After the
theoretical framework settled, the author took much effort to analyze the
external environment and internal resources of Bestpay and concluded the
rationale of Bestpay’s transformation and target market selection. Then, the
author provided detailed description about how the transformation practice was
implemented. In the end, the author concluded the points of Bestpay’s success
and the potential risks related.
