—] —] Native Native Americans’Quest for Identity 。Tracksin acKS By Wang Fei Under the Supervision of Associate Professor Long Juan Submitted to Foreign Studies College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Subject of English Language and Culture Hunan Normal University Changsha,Hunan May,201 1 AbstractAs Abstract As one of the best Native American writers since Native American Renaissance,Louise Erdrich focuses on Native American cultural identity· to In her opinion,it is every Native American writer’s responsibility sUbvert the stereotype of Native Americans shaped by the whites and to reconstruct Native Americans’identity.Native Americans’identity is a key theme in Erdrich’S Tracks. This thesis aims to explore how Erdrich reconstructs Native American cultural identity in Tracks based on Homi Bhabha’s post—colonial theory. This thesis consists of three parts besides the introduction and conclusion. The introductory part generalizes the literature review of Erdrich’s works,and discusses the feasibility of Homi Bhabha’s post·colonial theory to interpret Erdrich’S Tracks· The first chapter introduces Native Americans’identity crisis in Louise Erdrich,s胁如譬.In this part,the manifestation of Native Americans,identity crisis is analyzed in detail and then the causes of their identity crisis are well explored from the political,economic and cultural aspects. The The second chapter probes‘nto Native Americans reactions to their identity crisis with a close reading of the text based on Homi Bhabha’S concepts such as stereotype,mimicry and hybridity. Chapter Two argues that Native Americans can not get rid of their identity crisis either by upholding traditional identity or by adopting mimic identity and that they can not survive the conflicts between Native Americans’culture and the whites’culture unless they incorporate the two cultures and construct a hybrid identity.
