II II Abstract With the network communication technology and multimedia technology developing, embedded video surveillance technology gradually enters a new phase of the digital network and is widely used in telecommunications, banking, transport, power, intelligent buildings and many other fields.At present, the third generation video surveillance camera system based on network will gradually become a new trend in surveillance system because its unique advantages. As a result, the front integration, digital video, network surveillance and system integration of video surveillance system is recognized direction.The core of embedded video surveillance technology is embedded systems video capture, video codecs and network transmission technology, and it has high demands about stability, compatibility and real-time.Based on this trend and technical requirements,this paper proposes a cost-effective network video surveillance system for the small business, school and so on. According to the system design requirements, the paper has chosen S3C2440 hardware platform and embedded Linux software platform to develop, and realized the USB video capturring of the front, video compression, real-time network transmission. The main work of the paper includes: Construct embedded software development platform,including BootLoader design, Linux kernel cutting and transplantation, Linux driver design, production of the root file system. Video capturing and compression, mainly related to the work is video compression based on MPEG-4.This paper proposes a improved motion estimation algorithm, it greatly enhances the performance of MPEG-4 compression and has been achieved in the XviD source code library. Network transmission of compressed video, because of real-time requirement of video network transmission, the paper designs a video server based on UDP protocol, expands the UDP protocol and enables it to provide reliable video transmission.
