The differences between PC-based Web access and access from small, portable devices are such that wireless access constitutes a new medium. This is not simply because of differences in the devices themselves — smaller screen, text, no graphics, low bandwidth. More important, the whole user environment is different. The motivation to use these devices and the expectations of value are different. A mobile device is powerful because it is a wearable appliance, and because it is physically with a user more than anything else except, perhaps, a watch. It is (potentially) always on and always connected. Exploiting these characteristics requires that using the device delivers relevant content now, in a concise form. These needs will be hard to satisfy, and even harder to satisfy in a general way. Therefore, we see many specific applications being created that can focus the problem solution and, thus, achieve a useable result. We also see many experiments that fail even with limited targets. However, for users, there will rarely be a single application that justifies the use of such devices. This may occur in the enterprise world, as with niche uses of specialized handheld terminals; it will not, however, suffice in the consumer or even the general business market.
