III III Abstract After Meiji Reform, Japan was not satisfied with its insularity status, and decided to invade and annex China、Korea and other neighbor countries in way of war. It made so-called Mainland Policy and which was carried out during the First Sino-Japanese War( 1894 -1895 ). After Tonghak Uprising happened in Korea in Feb.1894, China and Japan both sent troops there and got conflicts even war. During the First Sino-Japanese War，in order to avoid conflict with Japan, or to end the war, The Qing government had made great efforts to seek the good offices of powers on many occasions. Having a significant interest in the Far East, the United Kingdom’s good offices were no doubt one of the main objectives that China was seeking. In this thesis, the process of Chinas efforts to seek the mediation of the United Kingdom during the the First Sino-Japanese War are mainly studied. In this paper, the activities of China to seek the good offices of the United Kingdom in the First Sino-Japanese War period are chronologically divided into four periods: 1．Before the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War (1894.6-1894.7). In order to avoid conflicts between China and Japan, China sought mediation or good offices of Russia, the United Kingdom and other countries. Li Hung-Chang first seek the help of Sir Nicholas O’Conor, the Minister of the British Embassy in China. And he also sought the mediation of Russia. But O’Conor, who was not enthusiastic, so Li mainly placed his hopes in the mediation of Russia, and made use of Russias intervention to stimulate the British to participate in mediation. Li has also been actively seeking the help of Henry Barnes Bristow; he wished Bristow would convey his expectations of the United Kingdom to participate in mediation. He also made use of “Christopher Thomas Gradner incident” in order to drive a wedge between the British-Japanese relations.
