Abs tract: The low porosity and low permeab ility of coal reservoirs have brought about a big problem for the ex-
ploration and exploitation of coalbed methane in China. Based on the coal proxmi ate, coalmaceral composition
and low-temperatureN adsorption analyses, m icrofracture analysis by fluorescencem icroscope, helium porosity

and air perm eab ility analyses, this study investigated the geological control of porosity and permeab ility of coals
in Hedong, W eibe,i Y angquan, Jincheng, D atong and Huainan-Huaibei coalfields. The results show ed that
coal porosity ranged from 2% to 10% , and strongly related to the coalification degree. The porosity reached a
m inmi um value whenR o, r w as about 112%. The filling andm ineralization of pores by m ineralsw ere proven to

decrease the coal porosity. Coal permeability is commonly less than @ 10 Lm , and show s an exponential in-
crement relationsh ip w ith porosity. The anthracite porosity is commonly less than 6%,
