English textbooks recommended for English curriculum reform. As for a textbook newly published,
timely evaluation of SEFC 2003 is in need since it can provide some feedback that may be helpful
for its revision and better implementation. There are some articles giving specific views by senior
English teachers, but there is only a little formal study to evaluate and investigate SEFC 2003. So,
the researcher of this thesis aims to make a case study of SEFC 2003 from the aspects of
evaluation and investigation.
1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
Purpose for material evaluation activities are many and varied (Cunningsworth, 2002:14).
Generally speaking, there are three main purposes for textbook evaluation: 1) selecting a new
textbook; 2) testing effectiveness of a textbook; 3) designing a textbook (Xia, 2003:145-149). The
present study is expected to evaluate and investigate SEFC 2003, which has already been put into
use for four years. In this case, the purpose of the present study belongs to the above second one,
testing effectiveness of a textbook. To be more specific, the present study intends to identify
particular strengths and weaknesses of SEFC 2003, and how well it is implemented in ELT,
especially in Guilin.
As for the significance of the present study, it can be drawn from three aspects. Firstly, the
present study makes a case study of a textbook, which may be helpful for other studies in this field
of textbook evaluation. Secondly, the present study tries to make an in-depth analysis of SEFC
2003, whose results can be considered as reference for the revision of SEFC. Thirdly, the present
study makes an investigation of the SEFC 2003 users in this area, whose results are also of value
for the revision of SEFC 2003 as well as its better implementation in
