I III I IV Abstract Title: DEVELOPMENT OF GRAPHITE-CONTAINING AUSTENITIC CAST IRON ELECTRODE Major: Materials Science and Engineering Name: Xiaoling YUAN Signature: Supervisor: Prof. Jinfeng XU Signature: Abstract Austenitic cast iron not only has good corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, but also has good mechanical properties, especially the austenite ductile cast iron. It has the characteristic of forming small carbide tendency in the solidification process; single-phase austenitic compositions consisted in the matrix organization, and not produce martensitic transition at solid state. Its new members have obtained the widespread used in the international, that its rapid development has been brought new opportunities for the new cast iron welding material. According to the solidification properties and organization characteristics of austenitic cast iron, containing graphite austenitic cast iron electrode who’s specifications is Ф 5.0 mm x 400 mm, which suitable for welding of grey cast iron and nodular cast iron was developed. Welding process performance of the graphite austenitic cast iron electrode was tested and evaluated; the law of the joint organization and properties which affected by the process factors has been studied. The results are as follows: Coating ingredients of when the content of calcium carbonate is 30%, white clay plus feldspar is 8% and fluorite is 15%, welding process performance is good. Excess white clay and feldspar which contain a large number of SiO2 which makes the slag dilute make the slag too dilutes to cover the weld. Excess fluorite not only makes the slag dilute but also affect the stability of the arc. Too little fluorite is not benefit to let the hydrogen go, and the hydrogen pore is in the weld. Inadequate of the marble make the slag too dilute to cover the weld, which make the weld easily crazed, but excess marble make the slag covered on the weld uneven.
