AbstractThis Abstract This thesis has conducted a qualitatiVe study of enigmatic folk similes@瞎办流f y z))within a cognitiVe pragmatic行amework aiming at unmasking the cognitiVe mechanisms behind the construal processes of enigmatic folk similes． Being a characte“stic linguistic f．orm exclusiVely possessed by Chinese，enigmatic folk similes are witty and humorous，popular and vivid as well．The former part of an enigmatic folk simile is aIl allusiVe expression which resembles the face of a riddIe，whereas the latter paIt seems to be the answer to the riddle，which is the fundamental meaning the enigmatic folk simile wants to express．Used properly，enigmatic folk similes can help to expound prof-ound principles in simple language and to depict figures 1iVelily and ViVidly．PreVious studies，howeVer amuent mey are，mainly dwell on the argumentation of the origin，denomination， categorization，s觚ctllre，rhetoric^mctions，so on and so forth． In view of the inadequacy of the preVious studies，me thesis has attempted to expose the cognitiVe operations behind the constlⅥal process of enigmatic folk similes on the basis of me combination of releVance meoI‘y and conceptual blending theoIy Wb a曙ue that the first parts of enigmatic folk similes are ostensiVe stimuli，which serve as prompts that inte印reters use to retrieve fIrom their memories the most releVam Ⅱ background background knowledge and to blend on it creatively to arrive at the 如ndamental meanings of enigmatic folk similes． Given that context innuences an inte印reter’s constmal of an enigmatic foll(simile，we hold that integration with context is an important part of the constlllal process． Consequently’we maintain that the second part of an enigmatic foll( simile can be construed行om its first part on condition that the inte印reter is f．狮iliar with the backgrouIld knowledge concemed． Tb sum up，the brand—new approach to the study of enigmatic folk similes adopted in the thesis can not only reVeal the backstage cognition inVolVed in
