T h T h ough ts on 给 and its relevant sen ten ces A b stract: T here are a lot of problem s related to the C hinese character 给 w hich m ean s to giv e in m o d ern C h in ese. In th is p ap er, o n th e b asis o f com p reh en siv e studying on previous research results, parts of speech , verbs of 给，and senten ces of 给 has been analyzed，and especially the academ ic debate and the am biguous co n clu sion o n th e subject h as b een stu died w ith a h ard-w ork in g try. F irst, T he investigation into the character 给 has been carried out by reading a large num ber of m aterials.It has been found that 给 as a verb w as firstly used in Q in D ynasty. T he relationship of 给 and 与 and the features of 给’s usage w hich w as u sed at th at p erio d of tim e h av e b een exp lained on th e basis o f th at co n clu sion . T h en , m any factors w hich lead to 给 changed to a preposition has been discussed on the follow ing chapters.In the m ean tim e, 给 as an auxiliary w ord has been analyzed and finally has been m ade a conclusion that 给 w hich b elongs to”给 vp can not be a p rep o sition bu t an aux iliary w ord , b ecau se it h as b een no lon ger ad ded an y N o m in al P a rts . Second, the paper has explored the sentences of 给 and som e problem s in the fram ew ork of 给’s structure b ased on four kinds of 给s senten ces w hich w as po sed b y Z h u D ex i firstly. It is b eliev ed th at th ere are sev eral co nn ection s am on g th e four k in d s of 给’s sentences on th e usage.S2 and S3 are the b asic 给,s sentences, and oth er relev ant 给 ,s sentences are deriv ative from the tw o basic geis senten ces. T hird, 给 notonly can express the m eaning of giving,but also can express m any gram m atical m ean in g s, su ch as p assiv e m ean in g an d d isp osal m ean in g .
