Chinese Literature The division of Chinese literature The literary history of China can be divided into two main periods: 1. classical period (Pre-Qin ～ late Qing) ancient period (Pre-Qin ～1840) pre-modern period (1840 ～1919) 2. modern and contemporary period modern period (1919 ～1949) contemporary period (1949 ～now) Classical literature The history of Chinese literature Beginning with primitive mythology, Chinese literature developed with The Book of Songs, The Poetry of Chu, the prose of the Pre-Qin Period, Hanfu and yuefu folk songs of the Han Dynasty, the literary criticism in the Wei and Jin dynasties, the Tang poems, the Song ci, sanqu in the Yuan Dynasty, and the Ming and Qing novels. The Book of Poetry Poetry Poetry, one of the earliest artistic forms , originated from folk songs before the existence of written Chinese . Its contents evolved out of people’s everyday life, and reflected their labor and entertainment. The Book of songs and The Poetry of Chu are regarded as the two peaks of China s earliest literary history. The Book of Songs The Book of Songs is a collection of China’s 305 oldest poems from the early Western Zhou Dynasty to the middle Spring and Autumn Period, and is regarded as the earliest realistic literature in China . As the starting point of Chinese literature, The Book of Songs enjoys a reputation of artistic value and has a great influence on the literary works that followed.
