] ] AbstractI沁bert Abstract I沁bert Frost.an unofficial Poet Laureate,is the first to win the Pulitzer Prize for four times in American history.His seemingly simple and plain poems transcend his times and have been well received and widelv appreciated.With the methods of the New Criticism and Marxist’S historical materialism,this thesis studies the transition in Frost’S poetic career based on a close reading of his poems,and explores the social, familial,and personal causes of this transition. Based on a review of studies on Frost both at home and abroad,the introduction puts forward the theme of this thesis,that is,Frost’S poetic career undergoes an obvious transition from romanticism to modernism. The Introduction also presents the basic view,structure,the main content as well as the study methods of this thesis. Chapter One probes into factors of Frost’S transition.Influenced by great changes taking place in America in the early decades of the twentieth century,his personal and familial tragedies,and the modernist movement.Frost’S world outlook changes and his later poems are filled with depression and despair presenting a wasteland world of modem America and revealing his modernist tendency. Chapter Two concentrates on Frost’S early poetic period(1 890—1 9 1 5). His early poems are typical romantic poems about harmonious relations among man,nature and society.They are optimistic in thinking,rich in imagination,cheerful in emotion,and full of sensuous appeal.However, there are also some beginnings of modernist tendency in his early poems. Chapter Chapter Three explores Frost’S modemist period(1 9 1 6.1 939).In his poems in this period,the sunny and beautiful nature in his early poems has tumed to a cold,dark,and lifeless desert.People living in this ‘‘desertare filled with a strong sense of alienation.His traditional poetic form shows even more his yeaming for order in a disordered society.He has become a modernist poet still writing in the traditional way.
