ii ii Abstract The study of conceptual metaphor has gone through a rapid progress since Metaphors We Live by written by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) was published. Metaphor analysis entails not only the study of linguistic metaphor, but also that of conceptual metaphor. In the past decades, some studies have dealt with the translation of conceptual metaphor in English for science and technology (EST). However, they focus on no more than the literal translation and free translation in linguistic level, yet do not deal with the conveyance of images in conceptual level. And among the few EST metaphor translation studies done from the cognitive perspective, there is hardly research done from the cognitive approach to metaphor translation. In view of this, this study takes EST conceptual metaphor and its translation strategies as its focus and carries out a systematic study of translation strategies for EST conceptual metaphor from the perspective of cognitive approach to metaphor translation. The data collected in this study is from British National Corpus (BNC), English magazines and textbooks on science and technology. Among them, the data with a Chinese version is from English magazines and textbooks on science and technology. Through an analysis which is qualitative in nature, the following major findings are drawn out: Firstly, in the field of science and technology field, there are such phenomena as word shortage, cognitive needs and communicative needs, which conceptual metaphor can remedy, hence the naissance of conceptual metaphor in EST, which has many functions like the naming function, explanatory function, constitutive function, and popularizing function. Secondly, EST conceptual metaphor can be classified into MAN metaphor, ANIMAL metaphor, FACTORY metaphor, CONTAINER metaphor and JOURNEY metaphor.
