Abstract Dream, a spiritual product of human’s unconsciousness in sleeping, has enriched people’s another spiritual world since its birth. In the perspective of psychology, dream is a special and complicated psychological phenomenon. In sociology, dream is a continuity of culture since the birth of human. In the field of humanism, it is a carrier connecting reality and spirit. The existence of dream is known from a natural phenomenon to a reflection with social and cultural connotations. The different interpretations of dream contribute tremendously to human culture. The focus of dream has been transferred from superstitions in ancient ages to psychology, physiology, natural science, and study of humanities. This paper, taking dream as a research subject, is devoted to make the research of dream transferred from the field of psychology to aesthetics. Accordingly, the aesthetic research of dream is an overlapping of psychology and aesthetics. With this interdisciplinary perspective, this paper will analyze dream, a special spiritual phenomenon from its aesthetic features and values and influences upon artistic creations and aesthetic appreciations. This paper is composed of five chapters. Chapter one summarizes current research on dreams and aesthetics of dreams from psychoanalytic school. In chapter two, essences of aesthetic appreciations upon dreams are presented and this chapter also classifies dreams based on the production of dreams within psychological system and discusses ways of aesthetic appreciation of dreams. Chapter three, the major part of this paper, has analyzed aesthetic features and functions of dreams in a detailed way. Specifically, the first part of chapter three discusses aesthetic features of dreams, namely, features of illusion, symbolism, transcendence, idealism and criticism.
