AbstractAbstract Abstract Abstract This thesis attempts to further the studies of transmission of images from the CROSS—cultural perspective．The author holds that the most desirable principle in the transmission of images is to transmit the images to the highest degree，that is，to keep the meanings and linguistic forms ofthe original images almost intact． The thesis starts witll the discussion of image concept．Based on the theoretical analyses of some ancient Chinese scholars such as Wang Bi，the formation of an image requires three basic elements：”yi’(meaning)，‘‘xiang’’(object)and “yan”(1anguage)．‘Xiang”fobject)is the starting point of an image；“yi”(meaning) refers to the psychological reflection of a user upon an object；“yan”(1anguage)is the linguistic presentation of an image．“Xiang”(object)is broadly connected with such things as natural environment and social surroundings； yi’(meanin曲is linked to aesthetic consciousness and thought pattem and“yan’’(1anguage)is concerned with linguistic features． Based on the analyses above，the author finds out that the major contributing factors in the transmission of images across cultures are linguistic features，aesthetic consciousness，thought patterns，geographical features，historical allusions and religious beliefs．They exert an influence on the transmission of images from various aspects．Linguistic features influence the linguistic presentations of images；aesthetic consciousness and thought patterns mainly influence the acceptance of source images Oll the part oftarget readers；natural contexts，historical allusions and religious beliefs influence the origin of images．Although there are SO many factors involved in the transmission of images，the author holds that images Can still be transmitted to the hi曲est degree on condition that appropriate techniques are applied． Literal translation can be applied to transmitting the images triggered by linguistic features．Free translation is applied to transmitting the images triggered by
