ABSTRACTMany ABSTRACT Many contemporary Chine∞writers have dealt with family culture． Most of their writings are based on animadversion upon traditional family culture．Describing the townsfolk families in Beijing，Lao She has written many works showing his attitude toward family culture and analyzed the traditional Chinese culture and its nationals’idiosyncracy．The thesis analyses Lao She’S attitude toward traditional Chinese family culture and the causes and summarizes the family culture in his works．There are five chapters in the thesis． Chapter One argues that in Lao She’S works the ethics in a family, including the paramountcy of the family,the father-and-son structure and the order of age inside the family,show US the characters of the traditional Chinese agricultural socie劬The paterfamilias of the family has the authorities beyond any other person，and almost every member does Care about the family instead of the motherland．Only a few can break away from the family and pursue self-liberation． Chapter Two argues that various harmful customs relevant to marriage prevail iIl his works．Some people，especially some female ones，suffer a lot and could do nothing．The liberation of the women would be nonsense without economic independence even if it is approved by many．In the name of love，some are childish,some are imprudent,some are sensual and others are after fame or money．In the so-called‘‘new-style marriage”there is no freedom，equality or happiness．At the same time，some couples in the traditional marriage are living together harmoniously hopefully． Chapter Three argues that in order to tell US more about the different aspects ofthe daily life in Beijing，Lao She also shows US colorful customs， such as washing the baby three days after its birth,celebrating when the baby is one month old，rejoicing when somebody gets married，felicitating a person on his or her birthday when he or she becomes senior,and getting 2 together together to say farewell to someone when he or
