AuthorJ s Life Ern est Hem in gway, one of the foremost authors of the era betwee n the two world wars, occupied a prominent place in the annals of American literature history by virtue of his revolutionary role in the arena of the twentieth-century American fiction. He was the 1954’ s Nobe1 Prize winner for 1iterature for his forceful and style-making master of the art of modern narration” . He enjoyed a very wide popularity both inside his country and abroad? Ernest Hem in gway, the great man, was bor n in Oak Park, on Jul y 21, 1899. Hi s father, a highly respected physician, bequeathed his son a way of life, and of death, initiated him into the rituals of hunting and fishing. In 1917, he graduated from high school, and then he went to work as a reporter? This experience later provided him with rich mat erial for many of his short stories. Rejec ted for army services in World War T, because of poor vision, he volunteered to serve as an ambulance driver for the Italian army at the fro nt, where he was seriously wounded ? After the war was over, he went to Paris as a foreign reporter? In Paris, he got to know Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, and James Joyce from whom he benefited a lot. He settled down in Paris and worked on some short impressionist stories. Gradually a distinct style of his own began to evolve, and together with it a Hemingway theme with a Hemingway hero” ? With the publication of The Sun Also Rises in 1926, Ern est Hom in gway became the spokesma n for what Gertrude Ste in had cal led “a lost generationn . Ernest Hemingways stature as a writer was confirmed with the publication of A Farewell to Arms in 1929. In 1937 he became a foreign correspondent covering the Spanish Civil War.
