Beijing University of Chinese Medicine; Abstract： Translation of the name of Chinese patent medicine into English is one of critical issues in English translation of TCM terminologies. By analyzing the errors in the English translation of Chinese patent medicine name and investigating the translation methods of 48 Chinese patent mcdicinc names, we find that the currcnt situation of English translation in this field is not optimistic, such as the error translation, inconsis tent trans la tion and lack of theoretical guidance in translation. In referenee to the translation strategies of domestication and fore ignizat ion, we held that, based on the no menclature of Chin ese pate nt medici nc, diffcrc nt t ransla tion met hods should be used, includ ing lit oral translation, transliteration, free translation and the combination of transliteration and free translation. In so doing, the translated text is supposed to be more concise and faithful to the original. It hopes that by the study on t his f i 1 ed, the tra nslation of Chinese herbal pate nt neime is specified so as to promote the trade of Chinese patent medicine.
