Unit12 Tibet 新世纪高职高专 旅游与酒店管理类课程规划教材 Contents Lead-in Text Tibet The Tibet Autonomous Region is located in the southwest part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It shares borders with Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to the east, Qinghai and Xinjiang to the north, and shares borders with India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Burma to the south, and bounded by Kashmir to the west. The region covers more than 1.22 million square kilometers, accounting for one eighth of China’s total area, and ranking second in China. The total population of the region is about 2.8 million. Ninety percent of the people are Tibetans and most of them live in rural areas. Text The geography of the region is complex with high and steep mountains, deep valleys, glaciers, bare rocks and Gobi deserts, which lie at an average altitude of more than 4,000 meters. About 100 million years ago, this region used to be a surging sea, with continuous collisions between the Indian Continent and the Eurasian Continent, it was then gradually transformed into today’s “world roof”. Most of Tibetan area has plateau climate, which is cold with low air pressure and thin air. Text Lhasa Lhasa, the biggest city in Tibet, is situated in the middle of Tibet and reaches the Lhasa River. In the language of Tibetan, Lhasa means “the land of the Gods”, or “Holy Place”. It was founded in 633 AD. The city covers 27,335 square kilometers and has population over 40,000. It is not only the capital city of the region, but also the center of Tibetan politics, economy, culture and religion. Lhasa enjoys delightful weather throughout all seasons. It has 3,000 hours of sunshine annually—hence its popular name“the Sunshine City”. The temperatures vary greatly between night and day, but remain fairly uniform during the year. Winter is severely cold, and summer is unbearably hot. The average annual rainfall is only 230-570 mm, and at least two thirds of the year is frost-free. Text Lhasa
