Today we’re very lucky to have with us a special guest, Dr. Pattle, a professor of biological science from Columbia M: Nice to meet you! W: Thank you for coming here to have the discussion about “clone and biological science”. Well, first, would you like to tell us what cloning is? M: OK. In biology, cloning refers to the process of asexually producing similar populations, but genetically identical individuals, such as bacteria, insects or plants. And in biotechnology, it is the process used to create copies of DNA fragments, cells, or organisms. W: That’s the genetically identical copy. So, some people also use it to refer to the production of multiple copies, such as digital media or software. M: Oh, Yeh! But, anyway, a clone is an exact genetic copy of a living organism. W: Living organism? You mean, it includes human beings? M: Oh, no, no…No humans have been cloned to date. Always excluding identical twins, who are “natural” clones. W: Is that to say human cloning is unsafe? M: As for human cloning, it means a lot of things to a lot of people. Some people see it as a great aid, still, others believe cloning is making a big mistake.
