重庆大学硕士学位论文 Chapter Two Literature Review Chapter Two Literature Review The main purpose of this chapter is to offer a brief review of the literature on important issues related to this research. It includes discussions on cleft and pseudo-cleft sentences in Chinese, theoretical framework of thematic structure and information structure. 2.1 Cleft and pseudo-cleft sentences in Chinese This section first introduces several researchers’ discussions on cleft and pseudo-cleft sentences in Chinese. Then it centers on the discussions on the syntactic status of “shi”, because “shi”is the most important word in these two constructions and many researchers attempt to define and analyze them through the nature of “shi”. Teng (1979) points out that the identification of a cleft sentence in Chinese depends on the presence of a syntactic marker, the absence in the superordinate clause of an element co-referent to the focused constituent, and the pairing of “assumed”(presupposition) and “asserted”(focus) information. Teng (1979: 102) defines a cleft sentence as “a ‘shi’predication with or without topicalization of some, but not all, unfocused element. And a pseudo-cleft sentence is the one with the topicalization and nominalization of all the unfocused elements”. For instance, sentence (1) is a cleft sentence and sentence (2) is a pseudo-cleft sentence. 是我在公园里看到他们两个的。 在公园里看到他们两个的是我。 The other contribution of Teng’s work is the comparison of clefts a
