1.1 Biographical Account
James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born on February 2, 1882, in southern suburb called Rathgar of Dublin. His father John Stanuslaus Joyce, who was a clerk in tax office, had tried all kinds of professions in his life, including distillery business, singer, dilettante, secretary; his mother, Mary Jane Murray, who was a pianist and whose life was dominated by the Roman Catholic Church and her husband, was an ordinary mild Irish woman who had given birth to 15 children, and James was the eldest.
At the age of six, James Joyce was sent to the renowned Clongowes School, which was a Jesuit institution at Clane. Because of the financial crisis in Joyce’s family, they moved their house frequently to worse residences. Later, Joyce and his brother Stanislaus were sent to a charity school---Christian Brothers’ school in North Richmond Street. There, the educative condition was bad. Just as the boy in “An Encounter” from Dubliners, little Joyce longed for freedom and adventures. In 1898, he entered University College, Dublin. There, he became interested in the works of Henrik Ibsen, St. Thomas Aquinas and William Butler Yeats. He had written an essay on Ibsen’s play When We Dead Awaken, and Ibsen replied to young Joyce and gave him high praise. In his school time, Joyce showed his writing talent.
Joyce’s father, who was an enthusiastic Irish Catholic patriot, wished his eldest son to be a priest. But young James hated the doctrine of Catholicism and was not willing to be a priest at his parents’ wishes. He knew that his parochial motherland could not provide good environment and conditions for his development on art and ideal. So gradually, he wanted to betray from his family, religion and country. In 1902, Joyce left Ireland to pursue a medical education in Paris. The next year because of his mother’s serious illness, Joyce returned to Ireland. After his mother’s death, he decided to leave a
