ABSTRACT
The object of this study is The Rank of Calligrapher written by Yu Jianwu in the
Liang of Southern Dynasty.According to the arti cle, it is difficult to determine the
specific time of the achievement of The Rank of Calligrapher . However, surely the
work was created after A.D. 523. Through analyzing and interpreting the structure and
the chirography, th is paper deeply studied calligraphy history and aesthetic standpoint
of the The Rank of Calligrapher, which is divided into four aspects: the change
between the ancient and modern style by analyzing the popular chirography; the
discerning of difference between Yan and Zhi by comparing the status of the
‘four virtues’; considering the grade and interest in view of the top-grade calligrapher;
the grade threshold concerning about the low-grade calligrapher.
As the first article of calligraphy with a system,The Rank of Calligrapher has
both connections and differences with the callig raphy theory of predecessors. This
article explores the meaning of the The Rank of Calligrapher at the time on account of
the analysis and comparison among The Rank of Calligrapher , The Summarization
of Ancient Chinese Characters and Gather Name of Calligrapher S ince Ancient
Times . In addition, the thought and chirography of the The Rank of Calligrapher also
has much reference value on later generations’ calligraphic work. Based on the current
aesthetic vision, the artic le places an emphasis on multidimensional study on the
value of the The Rank of Calligrapher.
