In order to avoid such collisions, a transmission within the upstream frame is assigned to each ONU, where only this specific ONU is allowed to send data. In addition, all ONUs must appear equidistant from the OLT for upstream framing, i.e., the beginning of all upstream frames from all ONUs should reach the OLT at the same time. In order to achieve this, an Equalization-Delay is assigned to each ONU. The ONU delays the upstream phase, in reference to the downstream phase, based on the value of the assigned Equalization-Delay. The Ranging process deals with the Equalization-Delay calculation. The Equalization-Delay calculation is based on measuring the round trip delay between the OLT and each ONU.
