* * * * * * Unit 10 Omissions in translation practices Omissions in translation occur when some Chinese culture-laden sentences are rendered into English, which have no equivalents or may create negative responses in readership. Translation is a comprehensive language and culture transfer activity which aims to express appropriately and fluently the meaning in source language in target language. Translators should not only pay attention to the literal and contextual meaning but also heed the cultural differences in the process and what is more important, they need to take a mega-linguistic look at the message being translated and particularly the whole text organic structure. Omission is necessary and inevitable in some cases. Omission does not mean loss of meaning in translation but is a tactic or device to most effectively and naturally put the original meaning.
