* Bipolar disorder is a common psychiatric illness. The lifetime prevalence of bipolar I disorder is estimated to be in the range of 0.3%-1.6% [Kessler et al, 1994]. More recent estimates indicate that the lifetime prevalence of bipolar spectrum disorders is higher (3.7%) [Hirschfeld et al, 2003b]. The incidence of bipolar I disorder in men and women is equal. Disease onset peaks in late adolescence or early adulthood, although up to a third of patients experience onset prior to age 15. Unfortunately, accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder may take as long as 5-10 years after onset [Hirschfeld et al, 2003b]. High recurrence rates of bipolar disorder result in significant morbidity and dysfunction. About a third of the individuals with this illness attempt suicide and 10%-15% succeed.
