Choosing Communication Channels
CHANNEL BEST USE
Face-to-face When you want to be persuasive, deliver bad news, or share a personal message.
conversation
Telephone call When you need to deliver or gather information quickly, when nonverbal cues
are unimportant, and when you cannot meet in person.
Instant messaging When you need to leave brief messages discreetly without having to call; when
(e.g., We-Chat or e- you expect fast answers and quick communication.
commerce customer-
service live chats)
Email When you need feedback but not immediately. Insecurity makes it problematic
for personal, emotional, or private messages. Effective for communicating with a
large, dispersed audience.
Voice mail message When you wish to leave important or routine information that the receiver can
(e.g., we-chat voice respond to when convenient. It would be inconvenient if the receiver needs to
messages) listen and reply to your message in public space, like on the subway or in the
elevator, particularly when the message is private or confidential.
