Lecture One Course Syllabus Course Description Our focus will be on the history and some selected readings of English Literature. We will discuss The English Renaissance, The Age of Romanticism, The Age of Realism, and etc. We will read plays by Shakespeare, novels by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, a few poems by Wordsworth, Byron, and Shelley, and some other literary texts. Readings A Short History of English Literature Selected Readings in English and American Literature Schedule Every Monday Requirements: You are expected to prepare the text which we will discuss beforehand. You need to listen attentively in the class. If you have any questions, you can put up your hand. If we cannot solve it in the class, we can leave it after the class. You need to prepare a notebook. When you prepare the text before class, look up the dictionary when necessary. Take down the sentencesand paragraphs which you think valuable. In the class, You should take down notes. After class, I may leave some questions for you. You can finish it in your notebook. In addition, you are expected to do some research which can enrich your understanding of the text. If you can not give me valid, plausible explanations, you d better not be late for the or be absent in the class. Please e-mail me or call me to let me know you will not be present for a particular class. How do we study a piece of text? Different people may give the same text different interpretations. We can say all reactions (responses)are OK. However, in our literature class, things are quite different. We know that writers create for the general readers, and our reactions to a text must be based on what the writer intended for most readers to receive. There should be the following process when you read a text. Classification : First, we need to know what culture produced it. In this course, that means that the works are products of Britain. This classification may be subdivided into English, Scottish, Irish, or Welsh. Second, s
