Yaw Damper * NBAA 2003 Safety Conference A T S 2 0 0 3 Civil Aviation Flight University of China 偏航阻尼器 Yaw Damper (YD) Civil Aviation Flight University of China In some swept-wing aircraft, the degree of Dutch roll can be significant, and requires automatic correction by the rudder system. Such a system is called a yaw damper. In a three-axis flight control system the rudder channel is used to balance turns initiated by the ailerons, and may also provide automatic yaw damping. This type of yaw damper is called a parallel type since the two functions of the rudder channel operate at the same time, i.e. in parallel. Alternatively, the yaw damping function may be independent of the autopilot rudder channel and may employ a separate control system to the rudder hydraulic power control unit. This type of yaw damper is called a series yaw damper since it is separate from the AFCS rudder channel. Yaw Damper (YD) Civil Aviation Flight University of China In some systems it is necessary to specifically engage the yaw damper if the aircraft is to be hand flown. This can be done immediately after take-off with the yaw damper remaining engaged for the entire flight. In systems that use the AFCS rudder channel for yaw damping, engaging the autopilot also engages the yaw damper if not already selected. Irrespective of whether the yaw damper is a separate system or fully integrated with the AFCS, the method of operation is generally the same.
