Autopilot flight director systems (AFDS) ? Yaw damper system (YDS) ? Automatic pitch trim system ? Autothrottle system (A/TS) Automatic Flight Control Systems Civil Aviation Flight University of China The AFDS system contains two parts: Autopilot and Flight director. The autopilot receives input mode and sensor signals, processes them, and provides command outputs to the ailerons, elevators, and rudder. These control surfaces respond by moving up or down or turning right or left, causing the aircraft to climb, descend or yaw. The flight director provides visual flight director commands which are displayed on the EADI for the pilot. The yaw damper system detects airplane oscillations, known as “dutch roll”, and minimizes it by controlling rudder displacement to oppose the yaw rate of the airplane. Dutch roll is a characteristic of high-speed, swept-wing airplanes. Automatic Flight Control Systems Civil Aviation Flight University of China Automatic Flight Control Systems The automatic pitch trim system maintains the airplane in a longitudinally trimmed condition through movement of the horizontal stabilizer. The horizontal stabilizer is a moveable airfoil which provides airplane trim in the pitch axis. The autothrottle is a computer-controlled electromechanical system which control engine thrust within engine design parameters. Throttle position for each engine is controlled to maintain a specific engine thrust (N1), or a target airspeed, for all flight regimes.
