Nutrients What Are They? Nutrients are chemical substances or ingredients in food the body needs to function, grow, repair, and produce energy. Nutrients and CFG We need over 40 different nutrients daily. Canada’s Food Guide is designed to ensure we get them all. Choose nutrient dense foods E.g.: Orange juice, milk, eggs Empty Calorie foods have little or no nutrients E.g.: pop, chocolate, chips Leader Nutrients Each food group is organized based on the nutrients the foods in that group provide. Vegetables and Fruit – Vitamin A and C Grain Products – Carbohydrates , B-Vitamins Milk and Alternatives – Calcium, protein, riboflavin (B2) and fat Meat and Alternatives – Protein, Iron, fat Each nutrient is responsible for helping our bodies is some important way. Too much of a nutrient can cause an overdose, and too little can cause a deficiency. Either of these conditions can cause harm and have serious outcomes. Classes of Nutrients There are six categories of nutrients: FAT PROTEIN Macronutrients CARBOHYDRATES VITAMINS MINERALS Micronutrients WATER FAT the most concentrated source of food energy provides us with 9 calories per gram helps us maintain healthy hair and skin cushions our organs and coats our nerves keeps us warm found in oily and greasy foods like butter, oil, bacon and nuts Protein provides us with 4 calories per gram the body’s building material needed to make new tissue and build muscle Found in animal sources like meat/poultry/fish and milk products, (complete protein) and plant sources such as nuts and legumes (incomplete protein) Carbohydrates the body’s main source of energy provides 4 calories per gram found in starchy foods like pasta, potatoes, rice and bread Simple carbs are sugars Complex carbs are starches and fibre Vitamins essential nutrients do not provide energy (calories) help our bodies get energy from the other nutrients found in a variety of foods, especially vegetables and fruits Vitamins Fat-soluble vitamins are s
