Thisstudytracked30,000adultsintheUnitedStatesforeightyears,andthey startedbyaskingpeople, “Howmuchstresshaveyouexperiencedinthelastyear ” Theyalsoasked, “Doyoubelievethatstressisharmfulforyourhealth ” Andthentheyusedpublicdeathrecordstofindoutwhodied. Okay! Somebadnewsfirst Peoplewhoexperienced alotofstress inthepreviousyear hada43percent increased riskofdying. Butthatwasonlytrueforthepeoplewhoalsobelievedthatstressisharmfulforyourhealth. Peoplewhoexperiencedalotofstressbutdidnotviewstressasharmfulwerenomorelikelytodie. Infact,theyhadthelowestriskofdyingofanyoneinthestudyincludingpeoplewhohadrelativelylittlestress. Nowtheresearchersestimatedthatovertheeightyearstheyweretrackingdeaths 182,000Americansdiedprematurely,notfromstress,butfromthebeliefthatstressisbadforyou. Thatisover20,000deathsayear. Now,ifthatestimateiscorrect,thatwouldmakebelievingstressisbadforyouthe15thlargestcauseofdeathintheUnitedStateslastyear,killingmorepeoplethanskincancer,HIV/AIDSandhomicide.
