Twenty-threeyearsago,attheageof19,Ishotandkilledaman.Iwasayoungdrugdealerwithaquicktemperandasemi-automaticpistol.
Butthatwasn#39;ttheendofmystory.Infact,itwasbeginning,andthe23yearssinceisastoryofacknowledgment,apologyandatonement.Butitdidn#39;thappeninthewaythatyoumightimagineorthink.Thesethingsoccurredinmylifeinawaythatwassurprising,especiallytome.
See,likemanyofyou,growingup,Iwasanhonorrollstudent,ascholarshipstudent,withdreamsofbecomingadoctor.Butthingswentdramaticallywrongwhenmyparentsseparatedandeventuallydivorced.
Atthatpointiswhenthetransformationbegan.Butitdidn#39;tcomeeasy.OneofthethingsIrealized,whichwaspartofthetransformation,wasthattherewerefourkeythings.Thefirstthingwas,Ihadgreatmentors.Now,Iknowsomeofyouallareprobablythinking,howdidyoufindagreatmentorinprison?Butinmycase,someofmymentorswhoareservinglifesentencesweresomeofthebestpeopletoevercomeintomylife,becausetheyforcedmetolookatmylifehonestly,andtheyforcedmetochallengemyselfaboutmydecisionmaking.
Thesecondthingwasliterature.Priortogoingtoprison,Ididn#39;tknowthatthereweresomanybrilliantblackpoets,authorsandphilosophers,andthenIhadthegreatfortuneofencounteringMalcolmX#39;sautobiography,anditshatteredeverystereotypeIhadaboutmyself.
Thethirdthingwasfamily.For19years,myfatherstoodbymysidewithanunshakablefaith,becausehebelievedthatIhadwhatittooktoturnmylifearound.Ialsometanamazingwomanwhoisnowthemotherofmytwo-year-oldsonSekou,andshetaughtmehowtolovemyselfinahealthyway.
Thefinalthingwaswriting.WhenIgotthatletterfrommyson,IbegantowriteajournalaboutthingsIhadexperiencedinmychildhoodandinprison,andwhatitdidisitopenedupmymindtotheideaofatonement.Earlierinmyincarceration,Ihadreceivedaletterfromoneoftherelativesofmyvictim,andinthatletter,shetoldme
