Unit2 Beat your fear
Section A Swimming Through Fear
I. Teaching Objectives
After studying this part, the students are expected to be able to
1. to talk about how to beat fear
2. to further understand the text
3. to apply the phrases and patterns
4. to master the essay writing skill
II. Teaching Content
Background information, new words and phrases, and reading comprehension
III. Teaching Emphasis and difficulties:
Emphasis: new words and phrases, reading comprehension
Difficulties: usage of the new words and phrases; the writing skill about the narrative essay.
IV. Teaching methods:
discourse method, situational teaching, task-based teaching and so on.
V. Teaching Aids:
The combination of Multi-media teaching with traditional teaching tools.
VI. Teaching Procedure
Warming-up
Group Discussion (5min)
Ask the students to talk about things they fear by asking the following question:
Did you have a fear of something before? If so, how did you overcome it?
Pre-reading Activity(10min)
Listen to a story about Jack’s fear, and answer some questions according to the story.
Background Information
1) Some information about Mediterranean Sea:
? an intercontinental sea;
? stretches from the Atlantic Ocean;
? surrounded by the Mediterranean region;
? enclosed by land: on the north by Europe, on the south by Africa, and on the
east by Asia;
? pleasant climate, beautiful coastline, rich history and diverse culture.
2) some information about Rip Current:
Rip current is a narrow, powerful current of water running perpendicular to
the beach, out into the ocean.
How to escape from rip current:
? swim sideways, parallel to the beach;
? get you out of the narrow outward current;
? wait until the current carries you past the sandbar.
