M6U3 Reading (1) Teaching aims: Knowledge aim: Help students to gain an overall understanding of the article. Enable students to adopt the reading strategy---- the use of examples Ability aim: Train students’ ability of working in groups Improve students’ reading ability, especially their skimming and scanning ability Emotional aim: Enlarge students’ knowledge about cultures in English-speaking countries Arouse students’ interest in English learning Make students recognize the necessity of learning cultural differences and the importance of “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”,. Important points and difficult points: How to help students fully understand the article How to put the skill into practice How to improve students’ reading ability Teaching methods: Communicative approach Whole language teaching Task-based language teaching Reading, explaining and group discussion Teaching aids: a tape recorder, multimedia, the blackboard Teaching procedures: Step1: Lead-in (1). Revision. Ask students to perform in different ways of greeting to revise what we have learnt in Welcome to the Unit. With the answer “There are cultural differences” to the question “Why do you think people in different countries greet each other in different ways?” we can naturally lead to the topic. (2). Pictures. Show three groups of pictures about cultural differences We need to understand cultural differences to avoid mistakes in communication. Today we are going to read a dialogue related to cultural differences. (Purpose: Consolidate what we studied last class, arouse students’ interest of study and bring in new subject) Step2: Listening Listen to the tape and find some basic information (1) How many people are involved in this dialogue? (2) Who are they? (3) Where do they come from? (Purpose: Practice students’ listening ability and get some background information about main characters in the article) Step3: Fast reading Get the students to read the dialogue quickly and do some
